Walking into a Virtual World: A Pilot Randomized Trial using Virtual Reality and Omnidirectional Treadmill Training for People with Chronic Stroke

Virtual reality (VR) technology has been introduced to the field of rehabilitation to promote improvements in walking ability, balance, and cognition. VR is a computer-generated simulation of 3-dimensional virtual environments that reacts in real-time to the user’s actions. A new opportunity has emerged to integrate omnidirectional treadmill technology with VR to allow for real-time fully-immersive rehabilitation. This randomized pilot trial will test the feasibility and user experiences with omni-VR and measure changes in cognition, walking ability, and balance after 3 months of training among chronic stroke survivors.
